What's guilt about? Over-reaching for something; and, afterwards, that sense of lingering regret. However: We've scratched out the "u." Take the U out of guilt, and you allow all the excess and tawdriness back in. This show features artists both established and new. It's inspired by the flaky gold leaf on top of a worn, plaster cast; by the sheen and seduction of an ambitious artist's career in the midst of a Recession.
Like it or not, we're experiencing the hugest economic downturn since the Great Depression. Supporting new art in a Recessionary market might seem, at first glance, like putting icing on a rancid, overbaked cake. But artists can't stop making art; that's their job. Even when monetary values are in flux, even when Society is in denial about the stuff that's truly important, artist's aren't. In a way, artists are the most reliable, constant force around.
The artists in this show have both paid their dues (they've made solid bodies of work) and made their peace with living on the edge.
We're psyched to give them air in our group Project Room space. Its architecture is inspired, to large degree, by data taken from Envoy, as well as other galleries we admire on the Lower East Side.
